On Wednesday, South Africa’s first ever health emergency on the African continent, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that the African Medicines Agency has given its approval for an application for an emergency injection of injectable sildenafil citrate.
The injection is made by the injection specialist, Dr. Josephine Ndofrese, for patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) who can’t use the injection or are currently receiving treatment for the disorder. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the WHO said that it is the only approved injection for the treatment of ED and that it would be used in men and women for whom Viagra is not the right solution.
Sildenafil citrate, an oral tablet used to treat ED, is an approved drug in the United States and other countries that treat ED and that works by relaxing the muscles of the penis, allowing for easier sexual intercourse.
The drug is injected directly into the penis and is administered orally, with the injection starting at about 30 minutes before sexual activity and continuing for 4 to 6 hours.
The medicine is injected by a healthcare professional with the help of a pump that provides continuous stimulation for the patient to activate the injection. The medication is then taken by mouth and should be taken about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
According to the drug information, there is no guarantee of safety in use and side effects of the drug. It is advised that patients have an opportunity to discuss the risks and benefits of the treatment with their health care provider, as well as any other medications they may be taking.
According to the manufacturer, the safety of the medicine is still unknown and there is no specific antidote for the drug, although some patients may have been given Viagra for sexual enhancement.
On Wednesday, the WHO issued a statement that said “The approval of an injectable solution for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is of the highest standard in the world”.
The injection is made using the same pump that is used to make the drug. It was first approved by the WHO in 2001, and is now being used as a first-line treatment for ED.
“The approval of an injectable solution for erectile dysfunction is an important milestone in the fight against ED and we urge all regulatory agencies to be more judicious in their use of this medicine. The approval of an injectable solution for ED is a clear step forward in the fight against ED,” the statement said.
A second step is to provide a list of patients for whom the drug is indicated for the treatment of ED and to provide the details of the patient’s past treatment with the drug, which could include sexual activity with the patient, such as erections. The list will be submitted to the health care professional for approval.
As a result of the approval and the patient’s current treatment, the WHO said the drug is a treatment for male impotence, which affects about 20 million men worldwide. The medicine is also indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
The medicine has been available on the internet since 2018, but was not officially approved for the treatment of ED in Africa until April 2019. In May 2019, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the use of the medicine, as well as the generic Viagra. A generic version of the drug is expected to be available in the US in September of 2019.
“In the first instance, our study supports the decision made by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in April 2019 to re-examine the approval of the use of the drug for male impotence in Africa,” said the WHO’s press release. “The MHRA has recommended that any generic version of sildenafil citrate be made available in the market.”
“In light of the current situation of the pharmaceutical industry, the approval of the drug in Europe, the UK and other countries is not without risks and the pharmaceutical industry is also working with regulatory agencies in the areas of sexual health,” the press release said.
It was also pointed out that the approval of the drug by the WHO in South Africa was the first step towards the development of a generic version of sildenafil citrate.
